Mindful eating and dieting are antithetical

Mindfulness is the capacity to bring full attention and awareness to one’s experience, in the moment, without judgment. Mindful Eating brings mindfulness to food choice and the whole experience of eating.

Mindful eating helps us become aware of our thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations before, during and after eating. This practice reconnects us with our innate inner wisdom about hunger and satiety. Clarity about the difference between emotional and nutritional hunger arises naturally from the practice of eating mindfully.

•••

One is about being the expert about when, what and how much to eat.

The other is about bowing to external authorities.

One is about listening to, and trusting hunger and satiety cues.

The other is about NOT listening, NOT trusting and controlling the body.

One is about being at peace with food.

The other is about conflict and struggle with food.

One is about finding open pleasure in food.

The other is about restriction or secret, guilty pleasure.

One is about the quality of your relationship with food and body.

The other is only about losing weight at the cost of that relationship.
